 Mokolii Island (Chinaman’s Hat)

This morning Kim, Mikko-Dakota and myself ventured out to kayak to Mokolii Island, also known as, Chinaman’s Hat.  What a fantastic morning!  I can’t not think of a better way to start the day.  We drove up the Windward Coast and dropped in at Kualoa Ranch Regional Park.  We had a very easy paddle out.  It took us approximately 20-30mins of paddling before we arrived at a small sandy beach and rocky area.

The colors were amazing this morning and I was sure that we would see a rainbow.  That just really would have been too much.  Nawww.  It would have been wonderful but even without the the rainbow, the colors were radiant.  Mokolii Island sits across from Kualoa Point and Kualoa Ranch.   Kualoa ranch was thought to be sacred by ancient Hawaiians.  King Kamehameha III sold off hundreds of acres of land in 1850 to a foreigner who also was one of his personal advisers.  You also might recognize Kualoa Ranch in movies like: 50 First Dates, Godzilla, Mighty Joe Young, Pearl Harbor, Tears of the Sun, Jurassic Park and Windtalkers or TV show like:  Fantasy Island, ER and LOST.

Directions to Kualoa Regional Park:
Kualoa Regional Park is located on the Windward side of O’ahu, on the north edge of Kane’ohe Bay. To get to Kualoa Regional Park from Honolulu, travel “Ewa” or west on H1 to Likelike Highway (63). Travel on Likelike Highway north through the Wilson tunnel. The road will wind down the mountains, so stay to your right and take the Kahekili Highway (83) cut off. Follow Kahekili Highway north for approximately 8 miles. The Park entrance will be on your right, or ocean side.

More trip report to follow.  Must feed child and get him off to school.
